Coach Lanier and the mighty Atlanta Select 15u Boys Team WHITE will be hosting the "SELECT FEW" basketball tournament, March 12 - 14, 2010 in Hapeville, GA. The tournament is open to Boys teams 15u only. If younger age groups think that they can "Man-up" to this group they can request to attend.

Qualified for the AAU Nationals - Atlanta Select 13u Boys Team BLACK

The 13u Boys Division I Nationals begin on June 27, 2010, about 5 months away. However, the Atlanta Select 13u Boys Team BLACK has already qualified to participate. All they have to do is to play in the State Championship to be seed in the national tournament. But this 13u team is scheduled to play in several more Super Regionals prior to traveling to Memphis, TN in late June.

This past weekend the team, coached by Coaches G. Stewart, M. Gates and D. Gethers, traveled to Tampa Florida to participate in the Suncoast AAU Super Regional. They won the championship, defeating all the teams they faced from Florida. They represented the State of Georgia, the Greater Metropolitan Atlanta area, the many schools that the players attend, the young men of the Georgia AAU program and Atlanta Select extremely well.

We are proud of these young men and we wish them continued success this season. They have added another picture to the "Trophy Case". Go Atlanta Select!

Definition of a Student Athlete - Marquise Lanier

Education must always come first. Marquise Lanier, an eighth grader at Bay Creek Middle School and a member of the Atlanta Select 15u Boys Team WHITE, excels in the classroom. This 6'2", 160 lbs student athlete has a 3.8 GPA and stays on the Honor Roll. He realizes that his parents and Atlanta Select policies are that if you do not make good grades, you cannot play basketball for his school or Atlanta Select.

That's no problem for Marquise, thus, he is playing basketball for his school, averaging 20 ppg's, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 7 rebounds and 8 assists per game. His Free Throw percentage is 90% and his shots percentages equal 55%. During the summer he plays with the best against the best as a key player on the his Atlanta Select team.

We know a quiet, special smile came across the face and in the heart of his parents Wallace and Nichelle) as they watch him make his first prime time "dunk" in a game. Thus, he has elevated his game to another level. The word is -- "You need to watch this kid".

Kudos to this true student athlete. Go Marquise.

Happy Birthday - Coach V

This past weekend was very special to our Art Director, Coach V. She celebrated her birthday on Saturday, January 23, by flying to Indianapolis, IN to attend the AFC Championship game between the Colts and the Jets. Her brother, Kenny Z and his fiancee,Gabrielle, surprised Coach V with the trip to see one of her favorite players, Peyton (Peyt,Peyt) Manning.

Coach V is an avid Atlanta Falcons fan but supported the Colts and especially Peyt, Peyt, in their quest to earn another Super Bowl championship. We are very proud of our Art Director who has designed every thing that you see that says Atlanta Select to include this web site. We wish her a happy birthday and may this year be her best ever. Go V.

Atlanta Select "Lady Select" 2010 "A" Uniform

Miss Brooke Carthon, a sixth grader at Middle Grove Middle School and a member or the 12u Lady Selects, models the 2010 season "A" uniform. This uniform is a unique design for the Atlanta Select young ladies only. It comes in the organizational colors of RED, WHITE, BLACK or SILVER.

The ladies of Atlanta Select have the options of two uniforms, the "A" that is pictured and the "B" uniform that is a unisex uniform that is pictured in the boy's uniform profile in an earlier post.

The teams have the options of 4 other designer uniforms that were offered in previous years. The uniforms are designed by our Art Director, Coach V.

Kudos to Coach Baskerville & Ronald (R.J.) Williams

Sometimes you wonder whether the hard work that coaches do pays off. Are the student athletes (trainees)really listening? Do they understand the fundamentals of the game that I am teaching? Did they really "get it"? It is not until you receive some feedback from the trainee that you know that your trainee really "got it".

Below is an email from Ronald Williams (R.J.), a member of Coach Baskerville's 10u Silver team last season and a student athlete at Harvester Christian School. It appears that R.J. really "got it" and is thankful. Congratulations to R.J. on his outstanding performance at his school and thanks to Coach Baskerville for his time and patience in teaching/coaching some of the youngest members in the Atlanta Select organization.

Atlanta Select salutes Preston Hodge, a member of the 17u Red Team last season, who played for Coaches Brown, Hollis and James. Preston is a senior at McIntosh HS in Peachtree City, GA and plays point guard on his high school team.

Atlanta Select Uniforms for 2010

Atlanta Select presents the 2010 Boys uniforms. Each team has the option to provide its players two uniforms, the "A" (dress uniform) which is a team uniform that follows the team and the "B" (practice uniform) which is player uniform that follows the player.

The top picture is the 2010 design and it comes in color combination of RED, BLACK, WHITE or SILVER, the colors of the organization. This is the "A" uniform. the side panel and the back of the uniform are also pictured.

A new design for the "A" uniform is introduced every year. The design is created by our Art Department and we solicit vendors who can create the pattern. All of our previous designs are being worn by our teams.

The other pictures are the "B" uniforms and they come in RED, BLACK or WHITE. Our "B" uniform is by "Shirts & Skins" a quality uniform maker from Oregon.

The head coach for each team will outline his uniform policy. He/she has the authority to make some exceptions to the organization's uniform policy.

The model pictured is Javan McBurrows, a student athlete at Arabia Mountain high school and a prospect for the mighty 15u Boys SILVER team.

Xavier Rubio - Basketball Star

Atlanta Select salutes Xavier Rubio, a ninth grade student athlete from Dacula High School. Xavier is a 6'4" basketball player that is averaging 10 Pt's, 5 Rb's and 3 blocks per game on his local recreational team.

Xavier is from the Dominican Republic and his family are friends with the family of Al Horford of the Atlanta Hawks, another outstanding basketball player from the Dominican Republic. I am sure Xavier is proud of his fellow countryman and strives to be a positive personality and dynamic basketball player just as Horford.

Xavier's mother is a co-worker of Coach Moore, coach of the Atlanta Select 15u Boys BLACK Team. They have discussed Xavier and his family joining the Atlanta Select organization. We would welcome them to our Select family and would continue to develop and promote Xavier in his effort to fulfill his dream.

Team Fellowship - Atl Select Boys 16u/17u SILVER

Coach Payton, Head Coach for the 16u/17u Boys SILVER Team, believes that players should get to know each other in a social environment. Recently, several members of his 2010 teams gathered to discuss school, basketball knowledge, church, priorities, responsibilities, bad influences, law, democracy, etc., and other Life Skills issues. He believes that these "fellowship" sessions builds SYNERGY, the soul of our organization. Go Select!

ATLANTA SELECT SALUTES DARRYL SLACK

Its feels good to see the dream of one of your former student athletes comes through. Darryl Slack wanted to earn a scholarship to college and play his favorite sport, basketball. Darryl, who graduated from West Virginia Tech last year, is using his final year of eligibility to continue to play his favorite sport and piled up an impressive stack of basketball NCAA Division I statistics: ranks #23 in 3-Pt Fg Pct (0.464), #26 in total steals, #30 in steals per game,#33 in total 3-Pt made and #35 in 3-Pt Fg made per game. He is averaging 14 points per game as one of the leading scorers for the West Virginia Tech - Golden Bears.

Darryl graduated from SW Atlanta Christian Academy, played on the same high school team as Dwight Howard and on an AAU team coached by Tony Hill and myself. His specialties were his three point shooting and his ball handling abilities. He played for us for several seasons and we remember him for being a very coachable student athlete who lived by his religious convictions. Last summer he toured Israel with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a trip that he says has been a highlight of his life.

Darryl is scheduled to be married this Fall to the lovely Jessica Alston. His plan is to coach young student athletes and share his basketball skills, life experiences and the Christian values that he has always maintained. I am happy to be a part of Darryl's life and we, at Atlanta Select, salutes this fine young man that others should strive to emulate.
