Select Nation NEWS, Monday, June 8, 2015

Good Monday Select Family,

I have received numerous calls this morning from parents looking for a chance to play for Atlanta Select. I always tell them that our teams have been organized since early Spring and that they are actively engaged in tournament play. However, I do direct them to our web site. Ask them to click on "Coach Select" and scroll down to the coach who has the age group/grade of their child. I tell them to negotiate with you and see if there is space available for the player to come out and train with your team. The rest is up to you to invite the parent and player to your workout or practice.

Many of these players may be coming from other organizations that have ceased play for the season. This is an opportunity for them to see what our organization is all about and a chance for them to play with us for the remaining part of the season. Remember, you are not forced to accept any additional players.

I also want to reemphasize our policy for inter Select Nation transfer of players. If a player from another Select team want to join your team it is not the sole decision of the player or parent. The transfer can only be done with the approval of the two head coaches. It must be a mutual agreement between the coaches. I will not approve the transfer if this is not done. We are family and that is the way we do it.

However, I do approve of Select teams supporting each other. If your team is not playing and another Select team is playing, and the coaches agree, then support each other.

On the other hand I do not approve a Select player playing for other organizations if they are AAU members of Atlanta Select. We hold membership and insurance liability for that player and we are still responsible. If one of your players elect to play for another organization, release them. That is our policy.

June is a slow month for our older age groups for participation in tournaments. They are actively supporting their high school coaches. Please follow through and offer your support. Limit your practices and meetings during the week and only schedule activities that do not conflict with the school coaches. If they are free on the weekends then actively engaged your players.

Many teams are traveling this month to tournaments out of state. I know Coach Ferrell is taking his team to Kentucky and Coach Chan is taking his team to Washington, D.C. this coming weekend. I encouraged these teams to take advantage of these trips and add some sightseeing activities in the selected cities. Visit colleges and historical sites. Make these trips an educational experience. But above all, remind your payers that this is a basketball business trip. And playing basketball is their primary purpose for the trip.

For teams traveling to events in Florida during the next several months, you must provide all vendors and suppliers with an exemption certificate before making tax-exempt purchases. I have a copy of the Consumer's Certificate of Exemption for Florida for Select Nation teams. Please contact me for a copy of this certificate if you are planning to be in Florida this summer. You must have a copy of this certificate along with our 501© 3 letter to receive this benefit.

I want all teams to plan for an "End of Season" event. It can be late August after school begins. Plan for a shirt and tie event somewhere. Alert your players that they will need a white shirt and dark tie. Every young man should have a white shirt and a dark tie. Let's be formal. You can have the event at a Golden Corral or other sit down establishment that will give you space. You can have it alone or with another team.   Put a planning committee together now and prepare a budget. Invite a Guest Speaker, i.e. a parent, friend of the team or an outside guest that will give "Words of Wisdom". Take plenty of pictures and plan for a good time.

Some of you may want to have other end of season events such as pool parties, etc. But still plan to have a dressed up sit down activity. We are Select!

This past weekend we added one additional trophy. The Mighty 9u SYNERGY Select won the age group championship at a Tournament R Us tournament.

They are champions again, earning their 13 trophy for the season.

The trophy count now is 110. Need 12 more to reach our new goal for the season of 122 to surpass our last season's count of 121.
