Atlanta Select - More Than Just a Basketball Organization

Atlanta Select uses basketball as the conduit to the programs of Education, Life Skills and Sports to develop student athletes into productive citizens. One cannot play basketball for the rest of his/her life but one can always find a way to serve others. Thus, Atlanta Select exposes its students athletes to a variety of meaningful programs outside of basketball.

The 17u Boys SILVER team under Coaches Payton, Fullard and Paige are always looking for opportunities to serve others. The team has become a partner with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in its fundraising efforts.

St. Jude is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay. Thus, the hospital relies on fundraising activities to support its operations.

Recently, the 17u SILVER team supported the Great Urban Race event the hospital held to raise funds. The team members registered participants, distributed t-shirts passed out water and cheered the the racers as they flooded the finish line. The team worked extra hard and represented Atlanta Select extremely well. They do more then play basketball, thus, they are more then a basketball team. Go Select!

Atlanta Select - Highlight of the Week - Preston Hodge

It is always good to see the dream of a student athlete come true. Preston Hodge signed a Letter of Intent and earned a scholarship to play college basketball at Paine College in Augusta, GA.

Preston, a senior at McIntosh HS in Peachtree City, GA, played on the Atlanta Select 17u Boys RED team during the 2009 season. He was committed to work hard under the tutelage of Coaches Brown, Hollis and James, and improved his basketball skills tremendously, by playing with the best against the best. Last fall he earned the point guard starting position on his high school team and won the accolades of all. See his work in the linked video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwjVSMBlmNw.

Preston paid tribute to his Atlanta Select youth basketball coaches by inviting them personally to be an official part of his signing ceremony. He is shown above with his AAU coaches, mother, girlfriend, his friends and his new car presented to him as a graduation gift. We know that Preston will continue to strive to be the best and we are honored that Preston was and always will be an Atlanta Select.

Preston Hodge is Atlanta Select's highlight of the week.

9u Boys Team RED < > 17u Boys Team RED

The 9u Boys Team RED and the 17u Boys Team RED have one thing in common. They both were "CHAMPS" in Mother's Day Weekend tournaments. The 9u RED earned their fifth trophy of the season in the Eric Snow's "Take it to the Rim" tournament while the 17u RED earned their first trophy during their second tournament of the season in Jamerica Mother's Day Classic.

Whether you are the youngest or oldest Atlanta Select team, you are provided the same opportunities for exposure and support. We are extremely proud of these two teams as they both added to the "Trophy Count" for the 2010 Youth basketball season, representing the other 36 Atlanta Select teams extremely well. Go Select!

Congratulations - 16u Lady Select WHITE

The Atlanta Select Lady Select 16u WHITE (Coached by Coaches Morris and Hollaway) had a great Mother's Day Weekend earning a trophy to display to all and to show that hard work pays off. The ladies played in the North Atlanta Invitational hosted by the Georgia Pistols and finished as the tournament's 'Runner Ups".

The weekend started Friday with the ladies avenging a prior tournament loss to the Pistol Gold in dominant fashion. They were led by Jasmine Strozier who poured in 22 pts in route to a 12 points victory.

Saturday, the ladies picked up where they left off and won the only game on Saturday by 23 points. Sunday was much more exciting .. led by the game changing aggressiveness of their bench, the ladies overcame a 10 pts deficit in the second half and won a closely contested game by a layup scored by Sydney Davis with .4 second left.

The victory allowed the ladies to advance to the finals where they were unable to hold onto a late game lead, thus, earning the runner up trophy. Atlanta Select is extremely proud of these ladies. They have earned 2 trophies in just 3 tournaments. Two out of three, not bad. Congrats to the mighty 16u Lady Select WHITE.

Trophy Winners, May 2, 2010.

Eighty percent of our teams have won trophies this season and the season is only half over. Our goal for the organization is 99 trophies. With the 4 earned this past weekend, bringing the total to 59, only 40 more are needed. It is the hard work of the Atlanta Select coaches and the dedication of the student athletes and their parents that has made this possible. Our primary goal is to provide an environment to prepare these young boys and girls for a college education, but winning a trophy helps make it fun. Congratulations to the winners for this week.
