Congratulations to the Mighty Atlanta Select Eighth Grade SILVER Team

The mighty Eighth Grade SILVER team under the leadership of the Hill brothers earned their second trophy for the new AAU season. They competed in the NAYBA Christmas tournament and earned a second place finish. The previous weekend they earned their first trophy for the season.

 

Kudos goes to Kenny Atkins for being selected as one of the tournament's MVP.

First Trophies of the 2013 Season

Congratulations to the Mighty Seventh Grade SILVER West Team for earning the First Championship Trophy for the 2012-13 Season.

The team defeated the Middle Georgia Magic 7th grade team in the Georgia Tar Heel's Holiday tournament. The Magic had a big, tall and aggressive squad, however, the well trained Atlanta Select team walked away with the first placed trophy.

 

This is only the beginning of activity for this team during the holiday season. Next weekend they are in the NAYBA Christmas tournament and the Team Forest Christmas tournament. And then next week they are in the NAYBA After Christmas tournament, December 26-29.

 

By the way, our Mighty 8th grade SILVER team earned the second trophy for the season by finishing as "Runner-up" in their division at the Georgia Tar Heel's tournament.

 

The goal for Atlanta Select Basketball Association is for all of it's teams earned 100 trophies for the 2013 season, ending August 31, 2013. We have 98 more to go.

Atlanta Select proudly announce new head coach and team. Head Coach Jason Ricker will lead the Mighty Eighth Grade Boys CLASSIC Team.

The team will serve the Gwinnett and its surrounding counties.

Atlanta Select salutes Student-Athlete Darryl Wanton, Jr. for displaying what a student-athlete is all about.

Darryl, Jr. has earned grades that place him in the National Society of High School Scholars and the National Honor Society.

 

 

Darryl, Jr. attends Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School and is a member of the Varsity Football team (defenses back) and the Varsity Basketball team.

 

For the last several AAU seasons he played on the Mighty CLASSIC team coached by brothers Tony and Elliot (Boone) Hill.

 

 

Atlanta Select is extremely proud of another young man who displays what a student-athlete is all about.

Atlanta Select Fantasy Football season is near the end. Kudos goes out to Coach Kevin Morris (Ellenwood Phillies Finest) and Coach (Airman in the U.S. Navy) Tahir Pyles for leading the East Divison and Coach Wallace Lanier for leading the West.

 The season is entering the playoffs and one of these coaches will be crowned the winner. We will keep you informed.

 By the way, Coach Pyles is on a leave of absence from coaching as he serves his country and now is stationed on the west coast of the United States. Coach Pyles lead the Mighty PLATINUM team for two successful years, 2010 & 2011. We salute and honor those who serve our country.

Atlanta Select New Head Coach - Coach Parsley

Atlanta Select proudly announce a new Head Coach and team. Coach Michael S. Parsley Sr. will lead the Mighty Eleventh Grade GRAND Team. The team will serve  communities in West Metro Atlanta to include the Powder Springs area.

Atlanta Select New Head Coach - Coach Thompson

Atlanta Select proudly announce a new head coach and new team, Head Coach Larry Thompson who will lead the Mighty Atlanta Select Sixth Grade BLACK Elite.

Coach Thompson was an outstanding player for Coach Hill and Coach Zeigler in the late '90 as part of the Atlanta Celtics. We are honored that a former player has become an outstanding coach and committed to teach and guide young student athletes.

Coach Thompson along with his assistant coach (Coach Patrick Stephens) lead a championship team,  the Running Saints, last season. His team will serve the greater metro Atlanta area with base of operations in the Dekalb County.

 

We welcome both Coach Thompson and Coach Stephens along with their players and parents to Atlanta Select. As you can see below they are part of the Atlanta Select CADRE.

Atlanta Select New Head Coach - Coach Lawson

Atlanta Select proudly announce a new head coach - Coach Darroll Lawson.  Coach Lawson will lead the Mighty Fourth Grade RED Team serving Metro Atlanta. Coach Lawson is conducting Skills Development training each Sunday at the Atlanta Select Skills Development Camp at Price Middle School. Atlanta Select Life Skills - Basketball Geometry

Atlanta Select conducts Life Skills sessions at each meeting. On Sunday, September 23, "Basketball Geometry" was incorporated in the training. Justin Thornton, 6th grade student athlete from Tucker Middle School uses a basketball rim to show the location of the diameter. He then explains to the group how to calculate the diameter of a circle by using the formula C = pi x diameter. He correctly determined that the diameter of the basketball goal was 18 inches.

 

Justin Morris (in the Atlanta Select t-shirt), from Chapel Hill Middle School used the same formula to calculate the diameter of the basketball by using the circumference of 29.5 inches and inserting that number into the formula.

 

The Skills Development group learned that the objective for the basketball game is to get a nine inch ball through an 18 inch hoop.

 

Brosnan Wilder, 7th grader from Sutton Middle school, noted that if the ball went through the bulls eye of the goal, there would be 4.5 inch margin for error all around.

 

The assignment for the next training session, Sunday, September 30, is to discover the length and width of the basketball floor and calculate the playing area.

 

Atlanta Select considers "Life Skills" as an equal partner to Education and Sports in the development of the complete Student Athlete.

Outstanding Lady Select Players

Sonia Forney

Two young ladies from the Mighty Tenth Grade Lady Select SILVER Team (coached by Coach Carla Hollaway) last AAU season, participated in the D1Spects All Star weekend, Aug 18-19, 2012.

"Sonia Forney from Newton County High School is one of the best student-athlete that I have coached in my career" states Coach Hollaway. She is a leader by nature, very touchable, hard worker and was very key to the success of the Lady Select SILVER team last season, Coach Hollaway says that she is looking forward working with Sonia next AAU season.

Stephanie Silavong is the point guard for ML, Jr. High School. Coach Hollaway has coached her since she was in the 8th grade. Coach Hollaway was her Middle School coach and has watched her grow into an impeccable point guard. "Like Sonia, she is also a hard worker, leader and knows when to take over a game when her team is not performing well" says Coach Hollaway.

Coach Hollaway thanks Sonia and Stephanie for the trust they placed in her and wish them the best in high school this year.

Atlanta Select, also, sends Kudos to these fine young ladies who represented the organization with class and style. They displayed integrity and CARS - Confidence, Aggressiveness, Relentlessness and SYNERGY!

Atlanta Select proudly announce and welcome new Head Coach Chris Morris. Coach Morris acted as a Team Parent Coordinator last season and has decided to take on coaching responsibilities. Paul Webb - Player of the Year

Atlanta Select RED 16U Basketball Team is proud to announce this year's Player of the Year, Paul Webb.  Paul is 6'4" small forward from Lanier High School with a 3.2 grade point average. He averaged 18 ppg and 8 rpg for the this year's Atlanta Select AAU Basketball team. Paul has been a member of Atlanta Select for the last 3 years. This will be Paul's last year as he will be taking his talents to a University next fall.

Player of the Year .... Sam Westmoreland scored over 550 pts also led the team in 104 stls also 3 buzzer beater shots two of them were three pointers for the championship.

Most Blocks ......Nyle Ridley had 55 blocks

Most Rebounds .... Nicholas Wells had 250 rebounds in 24 games

Most Assists.... Ronnie Wilcox who led the team with 185 assits

Hardest Worker of the year.... Antonio Williams Jr.

Guest Speaker - Mr. Freeman Davis - Middle Tennessee State University

Kudos to the Mighty Ninth Grade PRIME Team. The team earned seven (7) trophies for the season. Travel to Big Shots at Clemson, SC and the YBOA Nationals in Florida. A big thank you to Head Coach Dwayne Hall and his Cadre of assistant coaches and team parent coordinators. Another big thank you to the parents, siblings and friends of the team.
