I wanted to personally inform you that Team BELIEF is hosting a high school exposure camp for NCAA Division II and III, NAIA and JUCO level players. Registration Fee: $75 (If registered by January 31st)
Registration Fee: $100 (If registered between February 1st and February 29th)

Location: Suwanee Sports Academy

Grades: 9th through 12th

Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (Registration: 8:00 am - 9:00 am)

*All games will be filmed. Each participant will receive one complimentary DVD of one of their games at the conclusion of the camp. All other games will be available for purchase at the end of the camp. Multiple copies of games will be available in order for participants to be able to mail games to college coaches.

**All filmed games will be available for coaches at the NCAA Division (I, II, & III), NAIA (I & II) and Junior College (I, II, & III) level. Although, NCAA Division I coaches will not be able to attend due to NCAA Rules and Regulations, film of the event is allowed to be viewed by the coaches.

Exposure Camp Features:
Various college coaches will be in attendance
All games will be filmed/DVDs Provided
Former collegiate players will serve as camp coaches
Four game minimum
Player profile in college coaches packet
Maximum of 10 players per team
Teams will play every other game during game play
Certified Athletic Trainer on site

Any varsity, junior varsity or 9th grade players that attend will receive:
1. A DVD copy of one game from the event.
2. Team BELIEF bag, t-shirt & water bottle.
3. Instruction from former college players, who will serve as the camp coaches.
4. Team BELIEF packet (Includes info on recruiting, basketball)

Atlanta Select "Coach of the Year - 2011"

Atlanta Select proudly announce the "Coach of the Year" for the 2011 season. Coach Owens Q. Walker, the head coach for the Mighty Tenth Grade Boys BLACK Team. Coach Walker shares the honor with another coach who will be announced when presented. But let's take a look at Coach Walker's year with his team.

Coach Walker began the season by fielding a team during the NAYBA Christmas tournament in December 2010. His team competed against more experienced teams but his players gave a stellar performance indicating what was to come.

The Mighty Tenth Grade BLACK Team competed in our own "Select Few" tournament in March 2011 in which it was the first test to compete with brother Select teams. He demonstrated that his team was going to be a force by defeating several of his brother team, however his team placed second in the tournament, only loosing to the Mighty Tenth Grade RED Team coached by Coach Mason, the "Coach of the Year for 2010".

Then in April his team played in the AAU District/State tournament, competing with team from throughout the State of Georgia. He finished third, earning a bid to the AAU nationals, finishing higher than any other Tenth Grade Select team.

Before I continue, let me recognize Coach Walker's number one right hand man his assistant coach, Coach Gary McDaniel. Coach McDaniel is always by Coach Walker's side and provides the wisdom and support that helped propelled Coach Walker and his team to greatness.

Above Coach Walker accepted the "Excellence" award for Coach McDaniel at the Coaches meeting.

Now back to the achievements of Coach Walker and the Mighty Tenth Grade BLACK Team during the 2011 season.

Coach Walker played in several YBOA tournaments last season. And the key to success in a YBOA tournament is to make it to Sunday. His team made it to Sunday in every YBOA tournament he played. He made it to the final four in both the YBOA Duluth Shootout and Gwinnett Roundball Classic. He qualified for the YBOA nationals by finishing in the top eight teams of 22 teams in the YBOA State tournament. His overall ranking in YBOA for the 2011 season was number 9 out of the numerous tenth grade teams that played YBOA. Go Select.

Coach Walker entered as many tournaments as possible in June, July and August. One weekend he played in three local tournaments simultaneously, winning two trophies. He entered his teams in Exposure tournaments, specifically, the "Big Shots" tour. But the highlight of the season was winning the National Championship in the NAYBA. One of only two Atlanta Select teams that earned a national championship trophy in 2011. Congratulations. So again, congratulations to Coach Walker and his Mighty Tenth Grade BLACK team for having a great season, carrying the banner of Atlanta Select extremely high, displaying SYNERGY and achieving success. The Coach of the Year -2011, Coach Walker Go Select!

Applicants must be committed to support and implement the goals, objectives and programs (educational, life skills and sports) mandated by this organization.

Applicants must have experience coaching student-athletes to include knowledge of the fundamentals of basketball and willing to give their time, talent and expertise toward developing student-athletes.

Applicants will be required to become NCAA Summer Coach certified. Certification includes passing an online certification test and providing data for a background check (See the NCAA website). The schools in urban America have become virtual feeder systems for America’s prisons. There is no greater source of feeding than the black male, especially when he remains uneducated. Some experts wonder if these men and women are deliberately uneducated, since the prisons are able to earn billions from free labor being provided by those who are trapped in the system.

Annsonita Robinson at RollingOut.com highlights the disparities quite well:

For the health of the economic future of the country, lawmakers know the high school graduation rate must improve. It is estimated that nearly a quarter of those who entered high school this year will not graduate according to a new report by the National Center for Education Statistics. High school dropouts cost between $320 billion and $350 billion in lost wages, taxable income, health care, incarcerations, and other social services. The difference in lifetime wages between a dropout and one who earns a GED is approximately $630,000.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, the 2009 dropout rate for African Americans stood at 9.3 percent compared to whites at 5.2 percent. Also in 2009, the dropout rate for low-income students was five times greater than their high-income counterparts — 7.4 percent compared with 1.4 percent.

Atlanta Select Basketball Association is committed to fight this battle and prevent our young men of all colors from going to prison. We must emphasize the need to stay in school.

Atlanta Select Begins Third Season of Fantasy Football

Atlanta Select Fantasy Football has begun its third season with 12 players, all are affiliated with the Atlanta Select family. The League consists of 12 teams. A brief profile of each player and a snapshot of some of the football players they have selected is below.

Coach Z is the League Manager and has a team in the East Division (Team Zeigler), This is his third year playing and has not yet made it to the playoff round. Good luck this year. Three of his key players are Philip Rivers, Roddy White and Reggie Bush.

Kenny Z, the son of Coach Z, and the champion from last season heads East Atlanta Allstars. Everyone will be gunning to dethrone him this year. Three of his key players are Adrian Peterson, Larry Fitzgerald and Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis.

Coach Kevin Morris who coached the mighty Eleventh Grade Boys BLACK team last season heads the Ellenwood Phillies Finest. This is his first season. Key players are Drew Brees, Steven Jackson and Pierre Thomas.

Coach Tahir Pyles who coached the Mighty Eighth Grade Boys PLATINUM team last season is in his first year in Fantasy Football. He heads Team Pyles. Three of his key players are Arian Foster, Rashard Mendenhall and Miles Austin.

Coach Dionne Mason Coached the Mighty Tenth Grade Boys RED team last season and has won a national championship in YBOA basketball. She heads Team Prime Time. Some of her key players are Ray Rice, Calvin Johnson and Sam Bradford.

Team Parent Nichelle Tillman is playing her second season. Mrs. Tillman has earned accolades for being a professional photographer for the Atlanta Select organization. She heads The Grayson Jazzie-Shells. Her key players are Michael Vick, Hakeem Nicks and DeAngelo Williams.

Ms. Vera Zeigler, daughter of Coach Z, is the Art Director for Atlanta Select and is a die hard Falcon fan. She heads Team Lift Off. Some of her key players are Maurice Jones-Drew, Matt Ryan and Greg Jennings who we claim as a distant cousin.

Coach Tony Burton coached the Mighty Ninth Grade Boys RED team last season. He heads Team Burton. His key players are Chris Johnson, Frank Gore and Mike Wallace.

Coach Paul McCadney coached the Mighty Lady Select Black Team with Coach McCrae. He is a seasoned Fantasy player who makes the playoffs each year. He is in his third season. His team is Team Blackjack. His key players are Aaron Rogers, Peyton Hollis and Darren McFadden.

Coach Wallace coached the mighty Tenth Grade Boys WHITE team last season. He heads Team Lanier. After a disappointing last season he is ready to do battle. His key players are Jamaal Charles, Michael Turner and Matt Forte.

Coach Allen AC Christopher coached two teams last season, the Mighty Fifth Grade Boys SILVER team and the Mighty Eleventh Grade Boys WHITE team. He heads Team Christopher. His key players are Tom Brady, Tony Romo and Mike Thomas.

Coach La'Teef Majaliwa Pyles coached the Mighty Tenth Grade Boys PLATINUM team last season. He heads the Vine City RazorFingaz. In his second season he plans to bring havoc and win the championship. Keys players are LeSean McCoy, Andre Johnson and Admad Bradshaw.

There is no more important "Life Skills" then to know the steps to provide first aid or CPR if needed in an emergency situation. National Champions - 11th/12th Grade Atlanta Select SILVER Team

Congratulations to the Atlanta Select 11th/12th Grade SILVER Team for winning the first National Championship for the season. The team defeated Team Aim High 79-61 at the NSABA National Championship Tournament at Berry College in Rome, GA, Sunday, July 3, 2011.

The team, coached by Coaches Payton and Paige, were undefeated in pool play and remained undefeated at they advance to the championship.

Their first game in the playoffs was against the Atlanta Celtics, winning by a score of 81-61. The semi-final game was against the Georgia Hurricanes, defeating them by 7 points, 84 - 77. And then destroying Team Aim High by 18 points.

Atlanta Select is extremely proud of the Mighty 11th/12th Grade SILVER Team. The coaches primary purpose is to showcase these student athletes in an effort for college recruiters to see their talent. They will see young men that display SYNERGY, show great attitude and sportsmanship. Plus, they have the grades to support their effort.
The team has won the championship in every tournament they have participated in this season.
What a way to set an example for all the other 39 Atlanta Select teams.
They can be justifiably proud of their performance.

The Mighty Tenth Grade Black Team crowned Champions at the CC Stars 4th Firework Shootout on July 3, 2011. This team had been idled during the month of June whereas most of the players were committed to high school camps. Now they are back together and continuing to shine. We Salute our Atlanta Select Youngest Team, the Mighty Second Grade Team RED, as they begin play at the AAU Nationals in Memphis, TN.

This team earned six trophies during the season, earning a trophy in nearly every tournament in which they participated, and most of them were in the Third Grade/9U age group.

They qualified for both the AAU and YBOA Nationals. By the way they are ranked number ONE in YBOA in the State of Georgia.

The 2011 Warm Up for the Nationals Comes to an End - The Trophy Earners.

The Second Annual Warm Up for the Nationals concluded with the crowning of four new champions but honoring all participants who made the tournament a towering success. With activities for the boys in the Tenth, Eighth, Seventh and Sixth Grades at two locations (Action Sports Academy and Redan High School), teams from Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and throughout the metro area played their hearts out. Atlanta Select would like to thank them all and invite them back for Warm Up III in June 2012.

Earning the championship in the Tenth Grade Division was the West Georgia Xpress. With maybe only one player six feet tall the team demonstrated that height is not everything. Head Coach Kevin Jones indicated during the pool play that what his team lack in height they make up in speed and teamwork. Similar to the African proverb "When spiders work together they can tie up a lion", they ran, trap, out rebounded and of course out scored their opponents. They lost one game in pool play by one point. Congratulations to the West Georgia Xpress.

Atlanta Select RED took Runner Up honors in the Tenth Grade Division. The team is ready for the Nationals. Head Coach Dionne Mason has made sure of that. Atlanta Select is honored to have this national championship team from last season prepared for the events in July.

Top honors in the Eighth Grade Division was earned by "The Laurel Jones County (LJC) Elite from Laurel, Mississippi. Coach Randy Pettis brought his team to Atlanta for Warm Up Number I in 2010, earning a second place finish. With a core of the same players from last year and a few outstanding additions, the team, most definitely, is ready for the nationals. We appreciate this team taking the six hour ride to participate in our tournament.

Kudos goes to the RC Blackhawks from Huntsville, Alabama for their outstanding performance during the tournament and earning the Runner Up spot in the Eighth Grade Division. Coach Lesley Ford has thoroughly prepared his team for events in July.

Atlanta Select SILVER, Head Coach Carpenter, took home the championship trophy in the Seventh Grade Division. This team has been on a roll all season qualifying for several national tournaments. Coach Carpenter is pictured presenting the team Championship trophy to Greg Ringer. Atlanta Select can be proud that this team will be among the group of Atlanta Select teams participating in national tournaments in July.

The West Georgia Xpress earned Runner Up honors in the Seventh Grade Division. This is a testament that the Xpress is rather strong, sending two teams to the tournament and both teams earned trophies. Pretty sure that these two teams are prepared for the nationals. The team's next trip is to Chicago, IL prior to going to the nationals. Good luck to Coach Zachery and his mighty team from Villa Rica, GA.

Top honors in the Sixth Grade Division was earned by the Georgia Spartans. The Spartans out of the Eric Snow organization has been a force in every tournament they have participated in this season. Countless trophies. Enough Said. They are ready for the nationals.

Rounding out the Sixth Grade Division and finishing second was the Atlanta Select Sixth Grade SILVER. Coach Baskerville, the tournament director for the Action Sports Academy, gave the coaching responsiblities to his assistants and they did an outstanding job. We are confident that this team will represent Atlanta Select extremely well in Florida in July.

Again Atlanta Select would like to thank all the teams and organizations that participated in the "Warm Up for the Nationals". A special thanks goes out to Head Coach Jesse Baskerville (Actions Sports Academy) and Head Coach Wallace Lanier (Redan high School) for their hard work in coordinating and supervising the events. Congratulations to Coach McCrae, his assistant, Coach McCadney and the ladies of the Tenth Grade Lady Select RED. Traveling to Pensacola, Florida to play in the "Battle at the Beach" Classic, the team went undefeated. These ladies are on a roll winning their fourth trophy of the season.

Congratulations to Coach Burton, his assistants and the Ninth Grade Team RED that won the championship at the NSABA Memorial Day Weekend Classic. With only eight players, the team demonstrated why they can deal with the best. They have earned two national bids with six trophies for the season.

Congratulations to Coach Willams, his assistants and the Eleventh Grade Team GRAY for destroying their opponnents and winning the championship in the D1Spects Memorial Day Weekend Classic. Congratulations to Coach Brown, his assistants and the Eleventh Grade Team PLATINUM for winning the championship at the Elite Hoops Showcase Memorial Day Classic in Birmingham, AL. After loosing all their games in pool play by 2 or 3 points, the team never gave up. They destroyed all their opponents in bracket play to include a team that beat them in pool play to win the championship. Enough said. They are for REAL.

Congratulations to Coach Payton and Coach Paige leading the Mighty 11th/12th Grade SILVER team to the championship.

The team was undefeated this weekend, winning the championship over the Georgia Blue Devils 89 -82.

Warm Up for the Nationals - You are Invited.

You are invited to participate in the "Warm up for the Nationals".. If your team is planning to attend a national tournament, whether it is AAU, YBOA, USBA, USSSA, NAYBA, NSABA, BCI or other national youth basketball organization, then you need to play against other teams that have qualified to go to a national tournament.

Why? To see if you are ready to play against the best with your best team. Whether you need to make some final adjustments before you go to your nationals.

Where? At various locations in Hotlanta.

When? June 16- 19, 2011. Games begin late afternoon on the 17th. Our out of town guest can arrive early to take in the sights of Hotlanta.

The Concept:

In a mini tournament with only eight teams per grade/age group as part of the major "Warm Up" tournament. There maybe more than one mini tournament grade/per age group. We want to ensure that you have 3 games with the teams in your pool, that there are semi-final games and a championship game.

No quarter-finals. No crossover play. No third game in bracket play. All games at one location if possible. First come, First Served. No last minute sign ups. We will cut it off when the eight teams in a mini tournament are filled.

How Much? $250.00 if registered before June 1, 2011, $300.00 after June 1, 2011. Will provide discount for multiple teams from the same organization. Twenty five dollars off for each team that contains a group of three teams. Guaranteed 3 games, High school rules, no running clock, certified officials, we supply the score and time keepers. Atlanta Select Philosophy and Policy on Playing Time.

It is the intent that Atlanta Select will make our program fun for players. We want to create an environment of fun through hard work and enthusiasm. While an effort will be made to play every participant, it will not be guaranteed. A player must earn the right by demonstrating proper character and skills in practice.

However, this is not recreational basketball, it is a highly competitive program. Payment of fees do not guarantee playing time. Again, playing time is earned in practice.

Players who do not show up for practice, but show up at game time, may possibly not earn any playing time in the scheduled game. It is unfair for the hard working player who attends practice, learn the the skills, the plays and the strategy not be allowed the opportunity to play first and the most. They earned and deserved it.

Team goals will be emphasized over the individual.

How to Earn Playing Time on a Basketball Team

If you are a player who wants to get more playing time in the games, here are some tips on how to earn more time on the court. A basketball team needs contributions in all aspects of the game. If you can fill a need on the team, you will see more playing time.

Things you'll need: Strong Work Ethic

1. Understand and execute the basic individual concepts of basketball. You must be able have a good foundation in dribbling, shooting, passing, defense and rebounding. You may eventually excel in one of these areas, but you must have a basic level of competence to be considered for playing time.

2. Understand and execute the team concepts. Know the offensive, defensive and all sets that the team uses. Especially know your role in each of those sets. If one player does not execute properly, the whole system could fail.

3. Be a good teammate. Be respectful and encouraging to players and coaches. Be a positive influence on the team.

4. Attend all practices, games and team events. Being an ever-present, active participant allows you to be an integral part of the fabric of the team.

5. Excel in an area where the teams needs help. Every team has weaknesses. Understand where the weaknesses exist and focus your game to become a specialist in those areas. The following are typical areas that you can develop a specialty that is needed:

One-on-one defense

Rebounding

Outside shooting

Grabbing loose balls

By focusing on one or two areas, you can become the specialist and be the player that the coach looks to when that specialty is needed. Remember, Dennis Rodman had a very successful career by being laser-focused on defense and rebounding. In fact, he was one of the worst shooters to ever play professional basketball. There were plenty of good shooters on his team-- but nobody played defense and rebounded like him.

Tips & Warnings

• Stay positive and take advantage of the opportunity to play when it arises.

• Make it difficult for the coach to take you off the court by continually making positive contributions.

• When you are on the bench, be a positive contributor by encouraging your teammates and staying mentally in the game.

Remember, the Atlanta Select coach selected you. He/she saw your desire and potential to be a great player. You were not selected for show. Work hard, continue to develop your skills, practice our motto "CARS - Confident, Aggressive, Relentless, SYNERGY" and your feel good playing time will be there.

Kudos goes to Coach Sheik Charles Brown-EL who is starting an Atlanta Select team in in the Paulding County area. Coach Brown-EL, who has vast experience working with youth throughout the United States, has moved to Georgia and wanted to share his knowledge and experience with youth in this area. He is the head coach of the Mighty Fourth Grade Boys Team BLACK.

He has recruited a few players and is looking for more. However, he is not waiting to get started. He is conducting basketball skills development training each week with the players on board. Atlanta Select teams added at least four trophies to the count this weekend. Winning their first trophy of the season was the Mighty Tenth Grade Boys PLATINUM team coached by Coach La'Teef Pyles. His Hoopz City players took the Runner Up trophy in the Eric Snow Mother's Day Weekend tournament.
Coach LaTeef received the brotherly support from the Mighty Eighth Grade Boys PLATINUM team, coached by his brother, Tahir Pyles. Even though the Eighth Grade team did not win a trophy themselves, they shared in the celebration with their big brothers.

Making history as the first Atlanta Select team to win a trophy at the Wallace Prather Memorial Classic was the Mighty Eighth Grade Boys Team BLACK 8732, coached by G Stewart. His assistant, Coach Harris, guided the team in pool play as Coach G was away on assignment. The team finished as Runner Up in the Eighth Grade division, destroying all other Atlanta local teams. Over the years Coach G's team has earned a trophy in every showcased tournament that they have participated. The core group of loyal players have been with him for 6 years and have proven that they are a force to be dealt with.
Additional trophies were earned by the ladies this weekend as the Fifth Grade Ladies Select BLACK, coached by Coach Jackson, finished fourth in the AAU State tournament and earned a bid and a major seed to the AAU Nationals. This team has earned a trophy in every tournament they played this year. The count now is 4.

Coach Vincent and the Mighty Tenth Grade DIAMOND team traveled to Nashville, TN this weekend to fill in for an Atlanta Select team that could not make the trip after payment. They earned a second placed trophy in the Corey Brewer tournament. I think they are glad that they made the trip.

Whether it's an Eric Snow, Corey Brewer or Wallace Prather tournament, we can hold our own. Ccongratulations to all the teams that played hard this Mother's Day weekend. We thank you for all that you do. Go Select.

This weekend teams from all over the nation will be in Atlanta, Georgia for the Wallace Prather Memorial tournament. The tournament, that began in 2006, pays homage to a pillar of youth basketball. One can say, if there was not Wallace Prather, there would be no Atlanta Celtics. We can also say, if there was no Wallace Prather, there would not be Atlanta Select.

Coach Prather brought Coach Tony Hill and Coach George Zeigler (the founders of Atlanta Select) into the fold of youth basketball at the AAU level. His knowledge of the game, his dedication to promote youth and his eye for talent is profound. He touched so many and we must always remember. Atlanta Select has had teams participating in the Memorial tournament each year and plan to continue.

The Atlanta Select 12th Grade Boys SILVER Team has been putting in rigorous training and conditioning at practice. Their goal is to be prepared to be showcased in front of college scouts this summer. Thus, they were hungry to play in a tournament. The team had been idle since March.

Well the hard work that the team has put in paid off last weekend as they were crowned as champions in a local tournament. The team defeated the Atlanta Attack 61 to 38 in the championship game. The team, under the direction of Head Coach Payton and Assistant Coach Paige, has demonstrated their preparedness to represent themselves and Atlanta Select extremely well in front of college scouts this season. Thanks to the Atlanta Hawks for inviting members of the Atlanta Select Cadre to the VIP Draft camp on Wednesday, April 27 at Philips Arena. Atlanta Select Coaches were allowed on the main court to participate in various drills and scrimmages. The primary purpose was community relations and sales promotion.

Coach Hill and Coach Brown participated in the skills and scrimmages. Coach Z took pictures.

Our "Life Skills" Coach, Coach Corey "Tall Boy" Sanders is also on the Atlanta Hawks staff and he coordinated some of the events.

A shout out to Head Coach Al Lockett, head coach for our newest Eleventh Grade Boys Team, The CLASSIC. Coach Lockett was selected as "DeKalb County Coach of the Year" for 2011, representing the Catholic Metropolitan League. He coached the Jaguars at Saint Peter Claver Catholic School and has won the championship eight times in the last nine years. What an achievement. We are honored to have him as an Atlanta Select Head Coach.

The Tenth Grade Boys Prime team along with the Tenth Grade Boys SILVER team will be playing in an AAU Super Regional this weekend.

Coach T. Pyles (Mighty Eighth Grade Boys Team PLATINUM) and Coach L. Pyles (Mighty Tenth Grade Boys Team PLATINUM) practice "NO EXCUSES" for a place to practice. The park on a sunny day is great.

Both teams will be playing in the YBOA 10th Annual TBA Classic this weekend.

A few months agowhen Coach Z noticed that the Orangebury Xpress was hosting an AAU Super Regional in Orangeburg, SC he stated if any Atlanta Select team participated that he would go. Orangeburg, SC is his hometown and the site of South Carolina State University, his alma mater.

The Mighty Tenth Grade Boys Team RED (Coach Mason) and the Mighty Eleventh Grade Boys Team PLATINUM (Coach J. Brown) will travel with Coach Z to Orangeburg to do battle. The plan is to bring back the GOLD.

Coach Baskerville and the Mighty Fifth Grade Boys Team SILVER and the Mighty Sixth Grade Boys Team Silver plan to bring additional trophies home this weekend as they both play in YBOA tournaments.

Easter Weekend Tournment Results - WoW Select!

Five Atlanta Select Teams played in the Eric Snow "Rule the Air Classic" this Easter Weekend and four earned trophies. Eighty percent is not bad. Possibly it could have been 100% but brother team eliminated brother team in a semi finals. The highlight was the Mighty Tenth Grade Boys White Team defeating the Atlanta Celtics. The overtime win was grand.

In the Eleventh Grade Division The Mighty Boys PLATINUM Team was declared Champs over the Mighty Boys RED Team, only because the PLATINUM defeated the RED Team in Pool Play. Both teams were in the finals but elected not to play each other for that final decision at this time. Both teams joined in the celebration because they defeated everybody else in the 17u age division. Congratulation to both team for demonstrating a class act.

Our Mighty Sixth Grade Boys RED Team earned second place in their championship game. This team is the the most improved in the the last few weeks. Congratulations to the coaching staff for their hard work and congratulations to the team for earning their first trophy.

The Mighty Ninth Grade Boys RED Team had to the play the Mighty Tenth Grade Boys WHITE Team in the combined 15u/16u division semi-finals. They made a very positive impression and deserved to be recognized as Atlanta Select Champions. They did not receive a trophy this weekend but they are truly champions. They are pictured below with the Tenth Grade Team.

Finally, Kudos to The Mighty Eighth Grade Boys PRIME Team.. They won the championship in the NAYBA tournament this weekend.

This is another new Atlanta Select team that is making improvement week by week, and in this case, game by game. After losing their first game in the tournament they gathered themselves and won all the others. What a way to go. Congratulations again.

Atlanta Select - Friday Night Highlights

Atlanta Select Play Eric Snow - "Rule the Air" Classic.

Five Atlanta Select teams are playing in the "Rule the Air" Classic. On Friday Night the teams played eight games and won six or a 75% success rate. Three of the Atlanta Select teams had to play two games each.

The Mighty Sixth Game Boys RED team is all smiles as they ended the evening with a 59 -31 win over the Georgia Hurricanes. They lost the first game of the evening by 17 points but followed with a win by 28 points, thus, this win brought smiles, plans for a good night sleep and the goal to add 3 more wins on Saturday. The results, the championship!

The team is displaying significant improvement each tournament. In this, their third tournament, their goal is to bring home the gold. The team is coached by Head Coach Jones, assisted by Coaches Brinson and Motes. And a BIG "Shout Out" to their loyal family members, friend and fans. Go The Mighty Sixth Grade RED.

The other Atlanta Select team playing two games on Friday night was the Mighty Ninth Grade Boys RED team. This team won a championship last weekend and started the evening by winning by 18 points over the North Georgia Magic. However, they lost their second game to the Atlanta Celtics but plan to see them again in the finals.

The team is under the supervision of Head Coach Burton, assisted by Coach Boards and Norman. The bottom line is that they plan to bring home their third trophy for the season. Go Ninth Grade RED Team.

Undefeated on Friday night with a 44 points win in their final game of the evening was the Mighty Tenth Grade Boys WHITE Team. The team played the Cobb County County Purple Knights ending with the score 82-38. On Saturday they will face the Georgia Kings with plans to finish number one in their pool.

The team is guided by Head Coach Lanier assisted by Coach Morgan. The long range plan for this team is to "showcase" their talents in Florida, in July, in the AAU Super Showcase. Go Select.

Finally, two of the Atlanta Select teams will play each other on Saturday morning, brother against brother. It will be a battle because both teams were undefeated on Friday night. The Eleventh Grade Boys PLATINUM Team defeated Worldwide 69-60 and the Eleventh Grade Boys RED Team defeated the Cobb County Purple Knights 81-63.

Both teams are well prepared. Head Coach Brown, assisted by Coach Anthony, directs the PLATINUM team and Head Coach Williamson, assisted By Coach Chambers, directs the RED team. At 9 AM on Saturday morning they will do battle, then follow with some brotherly love. Go Select.

Atlanta Select Salutes - Bakari Copeland

Congratulations and thanks to Bakari Copeland on his gallant efforts this past weekend in the AAU State Division II tournament. Bakari "The Professional" Copeland (as his team has monikered him) scoring average during the tournament was 23 ppg. "The Professional" dropped 14 pts Friday night, 21 pts Saturday morning, 29 pts Saturday afternoon, then came back Sunday in the Semi-final game still in the "zone" and scorched his opponents for another 29 pts.

Bakari Copeland is proving that hard work on your body, mind and game throughout the week pays off. Mr. Copeland is a true believer in Atlanta Select's motto, C.A.R.S. and that's how this young man rolls on and off the court.

Greeting Atlanta Select Family and Friends.

It's been nearly two weeks since the last extended NEWS email and a lot has happened. I am glad to report that the State of the Organization is still STRONG. We are in the peak period of the AAU season and we are holding our own.

But I want to report some good news on an Atlanta Select personal family issue first. Coach Randy Foster, who is taking a leave of absence from coaching this year to spend more times with his grands, call me earlier in the week. If you did not know, Coach Foster has been experiencing some health issues for the last few years but it did not stop him from coaching. He lead the Boys WHITE team for three years, earning several championships and reporting this year of a number of his players being recruited and accepted in to college. That made him very proud. He has been on the waiting list for a Kidney transplant for years. Good NEWS, he learned this week that it may be very soon as his named is near the top of the list. We wish him good health and a speedy recovery and thank him for his continued support of Atlanta Select. Keep the Faith. GOD Bless.

As you know, we have Atlanta Select Coaches serving our country in the war zone. Coach Miyoshi Lanier has been in Iraq for several months and will be returning home later this year. We know how much Coach Wallace Lanier (Tenth Grade WHITE) miss his assistant coach and spouse but he is carrying on quite well. But the highlight goes to SSG (Mrs.) Lanier at this time as she has been selected as "Solider of the Week". Obviously she is doing an outstanding job in the war zone and we wish her GOD Speed and a safe return home. Congratulations.

Two weekends ago, with a number of teams playing on Sunday, we did not earn a trophy. It made history. Things have changed. Eight of the sixteen team we had playing in organized tournaments last weekend earned trophies. The count is now up to 29 for the season. Only 70 more to go. Eight in one weekend is great.

Leading the pack was the Mighty Second Grade Boys Team RED, Coaches James and Coleman, who won the AAU State championship, earning the top seed from Georgia at the AAU Nationals.

By the way this team is also number one in YBOA rankings. Go the mighty Second Grade RED team.

Championship trophies were earned by the Fifth and Sixth Grade Boys SILVER teams in the DeKalb Eagles' tournament. These teams coached by Coaches Baskerville and Christopher consistently earned trophies. They are scheduled to play in a YBOA tournament in LaGrange this weekend. Both teams will be playing up in grade.

Two weeks ago the Mighty Seventh Grade Boys SILVER Team went 3-0 in pool play but lost in the quarter finals. But Last week they were undefeated as they captured the championship in the YBOA Cherokee Roundball Classic. No more messing around. They are on a roll.

Earning their third trophy for the season and their first Championship is the Mighty Ninth Grade Boys Team RED (Coach Burton). Sporting their new Atlanta Select POINT 3 uniforms they took the gold at the YBOA Duluth Classic, defeating teams that they faced in the past. It is a fact they are getting better week by week. They will be at the top of their game when they play in the Corey Brewer tournament in two weeks.

Carrying the banner for Atlanta Select at the AAU State and earning a third place bid to represent the State of Georgia at the AAU Nationals is the Mighty Tenth Grade Boys BLACK Team (Coach Walker). In several overtime games the team displayed the relentless that was necessary to earned a trophy. Congratulations.

As always the Lady Select Eleventh/Twelfth Grade RED Elite Team won another championship. Every tournament that they have been in this year they have won. They earned their third trophy at the D1Spects tournament last weekend. Go Coach Kelly, Coach Jackson and the Lady Selects.

The Atlanta Select Eleventh Grade Boys WHITE Team was successful in a NAYBA tournament, finishing second place in a tournament consisting of many teams from out of state. Congratulations to Coach Christopher and his team. Picture was not available at press time.

Another team that had a stellar performance last weekend was our newest Eleventh Grade Boys Team, The RED team coached by Coach Williamson. They finished 2-1 in a NASBA tournament that did have a play -off. This team will do battle in the Eric Snow tournament this weekend.

The Tenth Grade Boys Team SILVER, Team PRIME, Team WHITE and Team Diamond played diligently in the AAU and also prepared to go to the AAY Nationals if they desired. They are ready.

Atlanta Select student athletes were invited to participate in the grand opening of the extension to Piedmont Park on Thursday of this week. They participated as the guest of Converse Open Gym. Converse constructed several outdoor courts at Piedmont Park and gave them to the City of Atlanta. Our players were invited to play on the newly constructed courts along with Doctor J.

This weekend we will have teams In LaGrange, GA for a YBOA Tournament, several teams participating in the Eric Snow Tournament, several teams playing in 3 on 3 tournaments a team in the NSABA tournament and several teams supporting community action projects to include the opening of the expansion of Piedmont Park.

Atlanta Select Annual LIP, CHIP, & SIP will be held Monday, April 25, 2011. All Coaches are to attend.

The founders of Atlanta Celtics, Wallace Prather and Karl McCray, nurtured Coach Tony Hill and Coach George Zeigler, the founders of Atlanta Select, into the AAU arena. We have the deepest respect and are extremely proud of the Atlanta Celtics and their contribution to the overall growth and professionlism of the AAU and other youth sports programs.

Korey McCray: From the AAU Atlanta Celtics to regal UCLA?

The college basketball world is a-twitter with word, first reported by Jeff Goodman of FoxSports, that the proudest program in the land stands ready to offer an assistant coach’s job to someone known for his work in AAU circles. The program is UCLA. The AAU man is Korey McCray, the 32-year-old CEO of the Atlanta Celtics.

“I’m right there in the running,” said McCray, speaking of the UCLA post. “I’m probably the favorite right now.”

McCray played college basketball at Mercer and served as assistant there under Mark Slonaker. He was a graduate assistant under Leonard Hamilton at Florida State and also worked at Chipola (Fla.) College. Today McCray coaches the sophomore boys’ team for the summer-league Celtics — he once played for them; his father Karl helped found the club in 1990 with the late Wallace Prather and remains its president — and runs a basketball training program called Fundamentals.

You might never have seen the Atlanta Celtics play, but you’ve seen dozens of alums. Dwight Howard, Josh Smith and Randolph Morris once comprised the Celtics’ front line. Derrick Favors was a Celtic. So were B.J. Elder and Isma’il Muhammad, members of Georgia Tech’s 2004 Final Four team. Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudemire wore the Green. (No, you don’t have to be from Atlanta or even Georgia to be a Celtic.) Two former Celtics — Trey Thompkins of Georgia and Chris Singleton of Florida State — figure to be first-round picks in the June NBA draft.

Over the past decade, debate has raged over whether AAU clubs have become too mighty. The big ones have their own shoe deals — the Celtics are an adidas team, just like UCLA — and some believe AAU coaches have come to influence recruits’ decisions more than family (and far more than high school coaches). For UCLA to hire McCray would be, depending on your slant, either a breakthrough moment or a sign that even a collegiate giant is willing to stoop to sign players.

Said McCray: “AAU guys get such a bad rap. I would embrace it. I’ve been in basketball my whole life. I have my Masters in adult education. I love summer basketball … If that’s how they’re going to label me, I hope to represent AAU basketball very well.”

Then: “I’m going there to learn from Coach [Ben] Howland. I’m going there with a mindset to learn. And I’ve got to be a good recruiter.”

Technically, McCray doesn’t yet have the job. He said he “networked” with Howland at the Final Four, but he hasn’t been to Westwood for a formal interview. McCray expects that to come next month, though UCLA might not name its new assistant until June.

A call to UCLA seeking a comment from Howland was unavailing. Said Bruins spokesman Marc Dellins: “We never talk about candidates for a job until a hire is made.”

There’s no question McCray would open doors for UCLA, or for any school. The name “Atlanta Celtics” cuts a huge swath in hoops circles, and he can also point to his role as a trainer. In that capacity he worked with Howard, the No. 1 pick in the 2004 draft, and John Wall, the No. 1 pick in 2010. But not everything, McCray said, is about access.

“We have a history of so many pros coming through our program. We’ve been blessed with so many good basketball players. But there’s also someone like me — I was never able to go to the NBA but I was able to get a good education and a Masters degree. One thing we do is special: If a kid plays for us, he doesn’t go to a JUCO. We make it our business to get him into a four-year college.”

Stop right there: We make it our business. Isn’t such a statement an admission that the AAU Celtics are what critics insist — a placement service for basketball players?

Said McCray: “I wouldn’t say we’re that powerful. If you’re Duke, people are going to say you get all the calls. That’s part of being successful. We love kids; we don’t just love the superstars.”

If McCray is indeed UCLA’s choice, he’ll be representing a program that has won more national championships than Duke and North Carolina combined. He’ll be scrutinized. If he succeeds, he might help change the perception of AAU basketball. And maybe he’s the guy to do it. Said McCray, speaking of his prospective employer: “[Howland] likes how I carry myself as a young man.”

Atlanta, GA-- Ask yourself, what does the word confidence mean? How would one define the word? Is confidence established in someone because of their enviroment, or surrounding? Or is confidence a mind-game and a figment of our imaginaton?

When it comes to Atlanta Select's Kayla Kudratt, it really doesn't matter how the word is described, the only thing that matter is when she is on the court magic happens.

There is a fine line between cocky and confident, and after sitting down with Kudratt, I came across a young woman who is extremely confident in her abilty on and off the court; And this summer she is going to make a big statement to the college coaches.

Last season, I spotted a shooting guard who always held her own no matter who was on the floor with her. Even when D1Spects raised the stakes and surrounded Kayla with the best talent in the Southeast during All-Star Weekend, Kudratt simply raised the level of her game to pass the competition, being named one of the MVPs. No matter how tall of a wall you put in Kudratt’s way, she will simply smile and conquer it.

After, Kudratt shot lights out in two games during the D1Spects Spring Fling this weekend. I could not ignore the 5’5 guard any longer, and jumped at the opportunity to display her for the world to see.

Kayla Kudratt defines the word female athlete, and loves when someone challenges her ability. The former track star started playing basketball in the 7th grade only to prove the basketball coach wrong and win a bet, by making the basketball team.

Since winning the bet Kudratt has been a captain, and has started for every team she has been apart of. Last season, Kudratt led Stephenson High School to a regional championship averaging 13 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals finishing her senior year.

Kudratt was recongnized for her efforts by being nominated for the Athlete of the Year by the Greater Sports Champions of Atlanta, and was a Wendy’s Heisman Nominee in her region. Kudratt not only has the acalades on the court, she is also classroom savy maintaining an 4.0 winning the Presidential Leadership Award for Stephenson High School.

Kudratt may not be the biggest player on the court, but she plays with the heart of a warrior. She is a scrappy on the ball defender, and automatic behind the arc. Kudratt told D1Spects, “I get my confidence from my mom. She taught me that I have to work harder then everybody else, because of my size and how important it is to believe in myself. That’s why everytime I shoot I know Its going in.”

While most seniors have “senorities” and are ready for the school bell to ring. Kudratt is working out five days a week, running sprints,and is in the weightroom preparing for the next level. Kudratt stated, "I know I will get my chance to play for somebody next year, and when I do, my goal is to lead them to a championship."

Kudratt studies the game of former Tennesee Lady Volunteer point guard Shannon Bobbit. Kudratt told Spects, "She [Bobbit] is the same height as me, but plays big even though she is small, I feel like I'm the same way." As for her size Kudratt uses it to her advantage, by using it as motivation to bring the best out of her every game. Kudratt confidenly stated, "My goals are to sign to a university, prepare for the upcoming NCAA season, and earn a starting position."

So far Kudratt has drawn interest from Western Carolina, UNC-Wilmington, Bethune Cookman, and South Carolina State University. Kudratt wants to major in Political Science,and minor in Sports Managment to pursue a career as a entertainment lawyer or a Sports Agent.

With a 4.0 GPA, a big personailty, and alot of game to back her up, the school that signs Kudratt will get more then just a student athlete.

The reason one should believe in Kudratt, because not only did she state she is going to play for an Division One university, Kudratt sees a bigger vision she boldy stated, "When it's all said and done with. I will have a banner with my name on it, hanging from the gym." She isn't saying this because it sounds good, Kudratt is making a statement, daring somebody to prove her wrong.

Kayla, comes froma great family enviroment playing with the Atlanta Select Organization, and thanks them along with her mother Marilyn, her Grandma Eleanor, her younger sister KiKi, best friends Bria Dorsey, and Sharbara Scott for their support and love, and sends special thank you to those who never believed in her.

Confidence goes along way, and with a player like Kayla, schools who pass on her will only end up paying in the long run when she plays against them. Confident, smart, and talented Kayla Kudratt is a special player you will never forget.

The Benefits of Playing AAU Basketball

Boo Williams, national chairman of Amateur Athletic Union [AAU] boys basketball, has been involved with the organization for 22 years and has had his own basketball program up and running for 25. Below he describes what makes AAU so valuable for its participants

AAU basketball gives every kid the same opportunity to play in a competitive atmosphere. Not all of our 125,000 players are big-time prospects; we have a lot of kids who are just going to be good high school players. But for those who are college recruits, there is no question that playing AAU will increase their chances of getting noticed. College coaches want to see their prospects competing against other good players.

The AAU experience is different from the one you get playing on your high school team; your role changes. You might be the best player on your high school team, but the third- or fourth-best on your AAU team. If you’re 6’5”, you’re one of the bigger guys on your [high school] team, which means your coach has to make you a post player. In AAU, you’ll be able to play small forward or two-guard—your natural position.

Some people think that we are a generic brand, but not everything out there is AAU. There are only a few AAU-sanctioned events, so make sure you know what you’re playing. When you first get involved, it’s important to pick the right team. Choose a team based on the organization as a whole, the coach’s philosophy and experience, and how well that coach will help you with your basketball knowledge and life skills. Things like traveling and interacting with others on the road, ordering food at a restaurant and accepting leadership and team responsibilities all play huge roles in developing those skills.

Undoubtedly, you will have fond memories of your AAU experience. I remember Alonzo Mourning had 27 blocks in the national championship game. Some people don’t get that many in a year. Another time during a tournament, we all went out to eat after a game. Allen Iverson was sitting there and bragging about how he could take Mike. We all thought he was talking about this kid Mike Evans, who was on our team, but then we realized he was referring to Jordan. Those are the kind of memories that will stay with you, and your coach.
